An NTN (National Tax Number) is the unique identifier the Federal Board of Revenue issues to individuals and businesses in Pakistan for tax purposes, used to file returns, register for sales tax and carry out tax transactions.
The short answer
An NTN — National Tax Number — is the identifier the Federal Board of Revenue holds you under. Every taxpayer record in FBR's system, from a salaried individual to a listed company, sits against one.
It is issued once, when you register with FBR, and it does not expire. It stays valid whether or not you file a return in a given year.
NTN and CNIC are the same number for individuals
For an individual in Pakistan, the CNIC issued by NADRA serves as the NTN. Once you register with FBR, your 13-digit CNIC is the number used on returns and in verification checks — there is no second number to memorise.
A company, an AOP or a registered firm is different: it receives a separate 7-digit NTN of its own, because it has no CNIC.
Who needs an NTN
- Anyone required to file an income tax return in Pakistan.
- Any business registering with SECP, or registering for sales tax.
- Salaried people whose employer or bank asks for the number.
- Anyone applying for most commercial licences, import or export registrations, or government tenders.
- Anyone who wants to be on the Active Taxpayer List, since a return cannot be filed without a registration behind it.
Holding an NTN does not make you a filer
This is the most common misunderstanding. The NTN says you are registered. Filer status says you filed. They are separate.
Your name appears on FBR's Active Taxpayer List only after you file an income tax return for the latest completed tax year. Someone with a valid NTN who has not filed is treated as a non-filer, and pays the higher withholding rates that come with it.
How to get an NTN
Registration is completed on FBR's IRIS portal. An individual registers with a CNIC, a registered mobile number and an email address, and verifies both. A business registers with its incorporation or partnership documents, a business address and bank details.
The registration is free. The work is in getting the details right the first time — an address, business activity or bank record that does not match causes problems later at sales tax registration and at filing.
How to check an NTN
FBR publishes free online verification. Enter a CNIC or NTN to confirm the registration exists and see the name and tax office recorded against it, or run an Active Taxpayer List check to see whether that taxpayer is currently a filer.
