How salary tax is worked out

You pay a fixed amount for the steps you have fully passed, plus the rate for your current step on the salary inside it.

Your salary sits in the Rs. 2,200,001 – Rs. 3,200,000 step, so the fixed amount is Rs. 116,000 and 20% applies to the Rs. 200,000 above Rs. 2,200,000.

Salaried or business?

Salaried rates apply when your salary is more than 75% of your total taxable income.

Below that, the business and AOP rates apply to your whole taxable income.

Salary tax questions

Yearly taxable salary is taxed in progressive steps. Each step's rate applies only to the income inside it, so you pay the cumulative fixed amount for the steps below you plus your current step's rate on the rest.

Your gross salary including allowances that are taxable, before income tax is deducted. Anything exempt or taxed separately at its own fixed rate is excluded.

Salaried rates apply when salary is more than 75% of your total taxable income. If it is 75% or less, the non-salaried business and AOP rates apply to your whole taxable income.

The Section 4AB surcharge applies to individuals with taxable income above Rs. 10 million. For a salaried individual it was 10% in 2024-25, 9% in 2025-26 and nil from 2026-27.

Yes. Deduction at source is not a return. Filing the yearly return is what keeps you on the Active Taxpayer List and lets you claim credits and adjustments.
